Wild silk is created by caterpillars as well as the mulberry silkworm. The term wild silk means that the caterpillars are able to be domesticated and are cultivated like the silk worm. A wide variety of wild silk has been used in China, India, Vietnam and Europe. In each type for silk the colors will be different as well as the textures, the reason for that is because the cocoons in the wild have been damaged by the moths that a have come out already.
If you have ever felt Chinese silk, it does feel different that silk created in the United States and in other parts of the world. Silk is the strongest fiber in the world and you can feel the difference in silk. Most people assume silk is silk but it isn’t, next time you are in a department store ask the clerk for Chinese silk and Indian silk and feel how different they are.
There are other larvae that produce silk, there are web spinners or otherwise known as spiders and in Hymenoptera which is bees, wasps and ants. Where the silk comes from is also a factor in how the silk feels. Just when you though that all silk was the same, you learn something new everyday.
